Advanced floating
If we diagnose significant abnormalities such as large hooks, wave mouth, shear mouth, steps or abnormal incisors occlusion - then a more detailed advanced floating would be necessary. Sometimes a sedation top up is needed and/or a revisit if it cannot be solved in one floating.
Periodontal disease Treatment
Periodontal disease is an extremely painful disease of the periodontal pocket around the tooth. It can be treated in early stages but can lead to tooth mobility and eventually tooth loss if it is not being dealt with! It is very common and early stages cannot be diagnosed without a detailed intra-oral examination.   We are equipped with proper diagnostic tools to find any diseased teeth and have dental instruments and a high power water flush to clean the periodontal space to let it heal. We are also able to provide pain relief, antibacterial flush and antibiotics if necessary.
Routine Dental Exam
Our routine dental exam starts with the collection and discussion of a detailed history of your horse regarding any dental related issues and a thorough general physical check up.
It includes first sedation which allows a safe and detailed full oral examination. With a mouth gag,  strong light source, mirror and dental probe I am able to diagnosis any abnormalities and show the Owner what their horses mouth looks like. A standard floating will then be performed to take down any sharp edges and hooks thus creating correct occlusion for a comfortable and pain free mouth.
Wolf tooth removal
"Wolf teeth" are actually the first premolar and are located directly behind the large inter-dental space where the bit sits. Depending on size, exact location or mobility of the wolf teeth, they can cause problems and thus can be removed. We recommend to discuss this with us case by case.
For the extractions of wolf teeth we give your horse a standing sedation, local anesthetic to numb the area and sufficient pain relieve after the procedure.

Your Vet from AP Dentistry is Gudrun Clark NVE, known to most as Cookie.

"I am a fully qualified and registered Veterinarian. After several years in mixed veterinary practice I have decided to follow my passion for horses and start my own Equine Dental Clinic.

I live and breath horses ! My husband and I live with our 2 little sons on our family Sheep and Beef Farm in the beautiful Central Hawkes Bay.  Next to my veterinarian career I have always worked with horses from starting young ones, to showing Western to teaching and helping others.

As a Vet , Horse Trainer, Horse Breeder and Horse Owner I understand that all aspects of horses health are important to have a long lasting partner-for any purpose.

However I believe that the importance of a healthy mouth in horses is widely underestimated and problems and pain get missed often as without equipment we               cannot see it ! Thus it is a crucial part of my work as an Equine Veterinary Dentist to not only help your horse have a pain free and healthy mouth but also to take the time for you  to see and understand whats actually going on in your horses mouth.

My practice is equipped with modern dental instruments, and as a Veterinarian I can ensure comfortable and safe sedation for the procedure, so your horse stays stress free!

I have completed further veterinary training in Equine Dentistry which means I can provide you with a comprehensive and up-to-date equine dental service.

This also means I can offer more than just the "normal" floating of the sharp enamel points.

I am able to diagnose and treat common dental diseases, remove wolf teeth and ensure correct occlusion of your horse's teeth.

If problems are diagnosed which are beyond my expertise and experience - I offer rapid referral to  experienced equine dental veterinarians.
